In a recent article in the Miami Herald, Vince MacMahon basically confirmed that Steve Austin would be returning to the WWE next year. Here is a tidbit from the article:
''We've always been able to make stars, but it takes awhile,'' McMahon said. ``You can't just snap your fingers and replace an Austin or a Rock.''
Both will return to WWE next year, he said.
Despite the ratings decline, though, ''Smackdown'' is still the highest-rated UPN show (more viewers than ''Buffy the Vampire Slayer''), and ``Raw'' one of the highest-rated cable shows.

More Details On Steve Austin's WWE Return
The following news is derived and re-written from PWTorch.com:
As we reported earlier today, a mainstream reporter in Atlanta took WWE up on the offer to visit backstage during a TV event and report on how the company operates behind closed doors. In the article, Vince McMahon was quoted as saying Steve Austin will be back in the company next year.
Unless the reporter misquoted Vince McMahon, that is generally big news. It would have to imply that either Vince McMahon has spoken with Steve Austin directly and agreed to a return deal, or is 99.9% sure that he will agree to terms of a return in the near future. Since WWE is a publicly traded company, such false information could reek havoc among the stock holders.
Again, if the quote used is accurate, this is somewhat confirmation that Steve Austin has officially agreed to a WWE return, with the only question remaining being when.
